The most popular story about the cultivar’s origins is this: in 1880 it was grown from the seed of ‘Lietuvos Pepinas’ by Jules Treboux, a French teacher working in Pärnu, Estonia. But the Estonians think that the variety is older, and call it ‘Pärnu Tuviõun’, which means “pigeon apple from Pärnu”. Whatever the truth, the cultivar is still much loved for its delicious fruits, which are so tender that should be picked with gloves.
